Getting a new tattoo is both an exciting and personal experience. To make sure the session is as smooth and comfortable as possible – and that the result looks amazing – preparation is key. Here are our best tips on what to do (and avoid) before your tattoo appointment at Masterpiece Tattoo.

  • Eat and stay hydrated: Have a healthy meal before your session – preferably with proteins and vitamins. Drink plenty of water; hydrated skin takes the ink better.
  • Get enough sleep: Being well-rested makes you more tolerant to pain and helps your body’s healing process.
  • Wear comfortable clothing: Choose clothes that give easy access to the area being tattooed. Shorts are great if you’re getting work done on your legs. Avoid tight or uncomfortable clothing that can rub against the tattoo afterwards.
  • Choose the right studio: Check portfolios and make sure your artist specializes in the style you want – whether it’s color, realism, hyperrealism, micro-realism, cover-ups, fine line, dot work, or a portrait of your dog or cat.

  • Sun exposure: Don’t show up with sunburn. It makes the tattoo more painful and can ruin the final result.
  • Too much caffeine or spicy food: Excessive caffeine or hot, spicy meals can increase discomfort and raise your blood pressure.
  • Stress: Arrive calm and relaxed. Stress can heighten your pain perception and slow down healing.
